Music Theory

My approach to piano tuition starts with an introduction to music theory, especially for those who choose to proceed with examinations.

A basic theoretical understanding will support you to compose your own music as well as read sheet music.

Having Fun

It is the enjoyment of playing piano that sparks an interest to learn, so it is just as important to learn music that you love.

What should I look for when buying a piano?2024-03-07T21:34:22+00:00

The first thing to do is play the piano and feel the weight of the keys. It is important to build finger strength so don’t be put off by heavy keys.

Next, play a high and a low note. The main difference when deciding which piano to buy is the sound quality. Remember that older pianos will require a specialist piano tuner to correct the sound quality more frequently.

Then, test out the pedals to see what the options are. The most important pedal will hold the sound and create an echo. You may also want a pedal that reduces the volume so that you can practice without disturbing others.

After that, imagine the instrument sitting in your house taking pride of place as you will want it to fit in with your home decor.

How often should I practice the piano?2024-03-07T21:34:03+00:00

Regular piano practice should fit into your daily routine and can therefore take as long as 10 minutes to an hour. Always begin by warming up the fingers with a few scales, play through the piece and then focus on improving a particular technique or rhythm.

Do I have to take music exams?2024-03-07T21:33:44+00:00

If you would prefer to learn just for fun and fulfil your ambitions of playing a favourite piece then let’s achieve that goal. Examinations are a good route to develop your technical skills to a high standard and can contribute towards UCAS points at Grades 6-8. The four areas of theory, scales, aural and pieces can provide structure to lessons.

Are online piano lessons worth it?2024-03-07T21:33:30+00:00

If you would prefer to learn from your own home, all I ask is that you have a suitable instrument to play on. We can use a virtual platform to communicate and develop your skills. A good setup will allow me to see and hear your playing to give you constructive feedback.

What age is best to start piano lessons?2024-03-07T21:33:13+00:00

I recommend starting to learn music from age 6 upwards. I provide age appropriate learning resources to maintain the attention of young students.

It is never too late to start learning to play the piano! I have taught piano lessons to older children and adults who are beginners or returning to the piano. An interest to learn is all you need and you will be rewarded with an improvement in your overall wellbeing. Send me a message to start your musical journey.
